Millions lost in Dollars Down Under gambling scandal!

Millions lost in Dollars Down Under gambling scandal!

$2.8 billion was lost in pokies nationwide in Australia in the past financial year, with $1.5 billion of that being lost in Victoria alone, according to a new report released by The Alliance for Gambling Reform.

The report is the first time both state and federal data has been brought together on Australian gambling losses and comes as the Andrews Labor government moves to introduce tougher restrictions on poker machines.

It found that Queenslanders gambled away $770 million, New South Wales residents lost $2.5 billion, Western Australians lost $625 million and South Australians gambled away $445 million in the past financial year.

The ACT had the lowest amount of money gambled away per capita at $745 per person, while Tasmania had the second-lowest figure at $790 per person.

The alliance's head, Tim Costello, says that the figures show Victoria is "the pokie mad state".

"Victoria has more machines than any other state, they are concentrated in poorer areas and they are ripping off people who can least afford it," he said on Thursday.

He called on Premier Daniel Andrews to stop what he described as "political cowardice" and phase out poker machines entirely over 10 years.

Daniel Andrews said the government would consult with the community before making a final decision on poker machine reform but acknowledged that there is a problem with electronic gaming machines in Victoria.

"I don't think there is anyone who would look at these figures and say that we don't have a problem here in Victoria … We want to make sure that we get this right for Victoria, but I agree with Tim that we do need to take action, it is not good enough just to leave things as they are," he said. Another report has shown that 74% of Victoria's nearly 200,000 electronic gaming machines are located in postcodes where more than 30% of households have incomes below Australia's median household disposable income of AU$77,000. Meanwhile, only 26% of the state's population lives in postcodes with more than 30% of households having incomes above AU$77,000 per year. So it appears as if those households earning below Australia's median disposable income are subsidising those earning more than AU$77,000 per year through their taxes. This is because poker machines return 92% of monies gambled back to players as winnings (house edge is 8%), meaning high-income earners can afford to lose larger sums without impacting their annual disposable income - see image below for how returns from 'losses' versus 'winnings' changes with increasing bet size). In Tasmania - which has fewer machines per capita than any other state - there was a 16% drop in money spent on gambling from 2016-17 to 2017-18 due mostly to decreased spending on poker machines (-17%). In contrast, expenditure on sports betting increased (+23%) and casino gaming increased (+8%). This suggests that people are moving away from poker machines towards other forms of gambling that offer higher odds of winning significant sums relative to their bet sizes (such as sports betting).

Gambling fever sweeps the nation - see how to play Dollars Down Under!

Dollars Down Under is a casino game for two or more players. The aim of the game is to score points by taking as many cards as possible to equal 10, or as close to 10 as possible.

The cards are numbered from 2 to 9, plus 2 jokers which are both wildcards. A player starts by dealing 5 cards to each player, clockwise. The remaining cards are placed face down in the middle of the players, forming the stock.

The player with the lowest card starts the game and play passes clockwise. On a player's turn they must draw one card from either the stock or their opponents hand. If they can use this card to form 10 (or a multiple of 10) then they take another turn - up to a maximum of 5 turns. If they cannot use the card, then they must place it face up in front of them and end their turn. When all the cards have been played, the player with the most points wins.

If two or more players have the same number of points, then the player with the highest card wins (suits are not used). The first player to reach 100 points (or more) wins outright.
